OMA Shohei Shigematsu

The August a+u monograph features the work of Partner Shohei Shigematsu. 34 projects designed during his tenure at the firm’s New York office are loosely organized to explore openness of architecture in multiple ways. From creating open-ended programs to designing elements that foster openness to life outside of built boundaries, Shigematsu believes in designing both defined and undefined spaces as a way to embrace the evolution of typologies. Across the fluid framework of the issue are commissioned artworks by Ari Marcopoulos and Lok Jansen representing work in two major cities: New York and Tokyo; essays by Sarah Oppenheimer, Germane Barnes, Nick Axel; and conversations between Shigematsu and Jeffrey Inaba, Carson Chan, and Paola Antonelli dive deeper into how making architecture more open can play out in our physical and communal experience of society.
