Venice Biennale 2014: La Feria Concreta
The La Feria Concreta exhibition design captures the schizophrenic personality of the Fair with two rooms of opposing contrast. A sober, monochrome box focusing on Santo Domingo’s history cleanses the palette before visitors enter a kaleidoscope of contemporary, color images. Materials uniquely indigenous to Santo Domingo were utilized to define each space. Concrete blocks featuring a perforated scoop for drainage and ventilation in the Caribbean climate serve as both backdrop and display system for historic images. This ordered sobriety is juxtaposed with lush, hand-crafted pelliza rag rugs that complement the vivid images of modern-day Santo Domingo.
