Over the past century a great deal of research has been done into theatre and theatre design. Even so, few innovative schemes have been realized. Audiences are still sitting in rows, gazing straight ahead towards the stage, mostly from the parterre level, least from the balcony.
How can we move away from the focus on shape that has dominated the architecture of theatre over the last 15 years? Is there only room for the fundamentally radical to exist amongst the more or less identical, comfortable and conservative theatres?
