Edo-Tokyo Museum
The Edo-Tokyo Museum is the first museum dedicated to Tokyo’s history. Since opening in 1993, this institution has explored the city’s evolution from the early Edo period to today. In 2022, the museum closed its iconic elevated building, which was designed by influential Metabolist architect Kiyonori Kikutake, for its first major renovation. Led by Partner Shohei Shigematsu, OMA was asked tohelp envision its next chapter, marking the firm’s first public project in a country where such commissions are rare for foreign practices.
